SCHOLAE STOCKTONIENSEUM

During the past nine months several old boys have tried to remember the school hymn. Many thanks to Ron Venus and Peter Venus. The words are taken from a prize day program which is dated 14th November 1929. At this time the Headmaster was W.D Seville M.A. (Oxon.)

English Translation

Scholae Stocktoniensium
Sis, O Pater, propitius;
Manus aedificet tua,
Favor tuus custodiat.

Our Father Thee we here confess,
And Pray that Thou our School wilt bless;
Establish it by Thine own hand,
And by Thy favour let it stand.

Antiquo digna oppido
Crescat novissimum decus;
Fac nos paretibus pares,
Fac nos virtute nobiles.

All worthy of the Town we love
May this, its latest glory, prove;
Our Fathers equals may we be,
Make virtue our nobility.

Hic educentur juvenes
Mites, honesti, strunui,
Verum Britannorum genus,
Urbi et patriae decus.

May they who shall be nurtured here
Be gentle, earnest, brave, sincere;
As pattern Englishmen to stand,
Pride of their Town and Fatherland.

Schola egressi foveant
Caram semper memoriam;
Scholam ornare veterem
Suis quaerant honoribus.

And when they leave the schools domain,
Sweet mem'ries may her sons retain;
Glad, when new honours they shall greet
To lay those honours at her feet.

Sic omnes dulci vinculo
Jungat communis caritas,
Unius cives oppidi,
Unius scholae pueros.

So common love shall join us all,
And bind us close whate'er befall,
Who in one Town knew homes sweet joys
And in one School sometimes were boys.

Da numerum, da gloriam,
Da fortem, pater, animum;
Da donum quodque optimum
Scholae Stocktoniensium.

Lord, give the increase, real and true;
The power to think great things and do!
Send every gracious blessing down
On this our School of Stockton Town!
